The Balance
When there is an oral imbalance of bacteria, certain types of bacteria can multiply causing inflammation of the gums leading to gum disease such as gingivitis, which left untreated can lead to periodontitis, a severe gum infection that can result in tooth loss and other serious health complications.
Not only do the microbes live in your mouth, but you also swallow over one trillion microbes every single day passing through your oral microbiome and travelling down to your gut microbiome.
If your oral microbiome is healthy, any harmful bacteria will be destroyed by the good bacteria in your mouth, but if there isn’t enough good bacteria to fight off the bad guys, they will then pass through the mouth and into the rest of the body.
This is where they can cause a host of problems including serious illnesses such as Alzheimer’s disease, pancreatic cancer and cardiovascular disease, to mention just a few.
Your oral microbiota is linked to your immune system so when your oral flora is diverse and balanced, so is your gut flora, enabling your immune system to function properly.
