The Problems
By about the age of 50 after many years of being exposed to antibiotics, certain medicines, processed foods, stress, environmental toxins and chemicals, good bacteria in our gut can become depleted.
An ideal microbiome consists of 85% of good bacteria in the gut, but as you age, the amount of good bacteria declines and there is just not enough good bacteria to keep you healthy and youthful.
Digestive problems as you age include constipation, peptic ulcers, diarrhoea, gas, stomach pain, irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) and gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) causing heartburn and other symptoms.
The use of certain medication especially nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) can also cause a whole lot of problems in the digestive tract.
Decline in physical activity, increased alcohol intake and stress can further impair GI function during those senior years.
